Backstory
GlipGlorp was a curious alien from a distant planet who loved to explore the vast expanse of space. After getting sucked into a black hole, he suddenly found himself inside a strange, rectangular device that he had never seen before. It was a GameBoy. He looked around and realized that he was now trapped inside a farming simulator game named FarmQuest. He soon discovers that a player is controlling the game form outside the console. GlipGlorp was relieved to find that he was not alone. The player takes care of GlipGlorp by farming crops to buy pet food for him, which is his favorite. The player also takes care of GlipGlorp's other needs, like spending time interacting with GlipGlorp, playing games with him or talking to him to keep him company.
Reflection
I enjoyed designing the pixel art that I used in this project. For the pixel art I sketched it out on paper; then I traced the sketch with pixels in adobe illustrator. But I did not enjoy prototyping. Using Auto Layout, Components, and Buttons in Figma did help speed up the process though. Using Chat GPT to create a backstory was an interesting new experience. Making a sitemap in the beginning really helped shape the direction of the UI. Also a making a user flow helped specify how the interactions would work. One major setback was organization. Naming every different frame was tedious. As well as arraigning the frames and making sections. Also being limited to five buttons was hard because Gameboys have 2 face buttons and a D pad, which makes 6 buttons. Designing an interface to be like a Gameboy game with only five buttons was have but i managed to figure it out. By using a direction on the D pad that isn’t used in certain actions; it can work as a back button. I think this solution works intuitively as it works with pre existing mental models such as smart phones where swiping up gets rid of a pull down menu. That mental model works similarly with my solutions as pressing up on the D pad when in a selection menu will go back to the previous menu. The navigation is fairly simple. Hit up on the D pad to uses the menu. Hit left or right to scroll though the selections hit the circle button to confirm selections. In a dialogue prompt hit up or down to select the answer. And then hit the circle button to confirm your choice.
